The Print Ritual: Nereliz’s Story

When Nereliz pictures herself years from now, she imagines a table full of photos and the people she loves leaning in close — kids, grandkids, friends — passing the prints around and laughing at the stories tucked inside them.

In her mind, it’s not only the birthdays and graduations and big milestones they’ll linger on, but the in-between snapshots too.

That picture in her mind is what first called her to Mootsh: “I wanted to prove to myself that my everyday, routine life was still precious and beautiful and worth documenting.”

“I wanted to get away from the thought that if something wasn’t ‘aesthetic enough,’ it wasn’t worth remembering. What a silly thought!”

Each month, she chooses ten photos. It’s not a curated highlight reel, but instead the scraps and snapshots that tell the truest version of her days — like the table after a great dinner party or the picture of her and a friend soaked from an unexpected downpour.

For Nereliz, there’s no need to overthink it: if a photo sparks joy, she prints it. “Mootsh’ing and pressure don’t exist in the same space,” she says. “Here, I relax. Create. Enjoy.”

When the prints arrive, Nereliz has started flipping each one over to write names and dates on the back, a small habit that makes her think of family photos from her own childhood.

Part of it is for memory’s sake, but part of it is for the future. She wants her children to have a stock of photos that not only remind them of their loved ones, but also give them a deeper way into their family tree if they choose to explore it.

“I picture myself flipping through these years from now. And what I hope shines through is love. That I loved hard. That I was silly and joyful. That my home, my family, my culture meant everything to me.”

For Nereliz, printing is less about making something polished and more about staying close to the life she’s actually living. And with every stack of prints, she’s making sure that life will be there to hold onto, years down the road.
